Former UTSA men’s basketball coach Brooks Thompson passed away Thursday night, the university announced in a press release.  Thompson, 45, was diagnosed with double organ failure in April and had been hospitalized for much of the past two months.

“The UTSA family is very saddened to learn that Brooks Thompson passed away on Thursday,” UTSA Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Michelle, his daughters, Ryan Michelle, Brooke and Addison, and the rest of his family in this difficult time.”

Thompson, who compiled a 133-178 as the head coach at UTSA, was relieved from his duties following the 2015-16 season. He had also worked as an assistant coach at Arizona State, and his alma mater Oklahoma State.

Regarded as one of the best all-around guards in Oklahoma State history, Thompson earned back-to-back All-Big Eight selections for  in 1993 and 1994, as well as NABC and USBWA All-District honors as a senior. He was taken with the 27th pick of the 1994 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic, and played a combined four seasons with Orlando, Utah, Denver, Phoenix and New York.
