Chris Monahan has been named as an assistant coach at Gwynedd Mercy University. Most recently Coach Monahan was the head boys basketball coach at Radnor High School for five seasons. Despite being one of the smallest schools in the state’s highest (AAAA) classification, his teams twice qualified for District playoffs – school firsts for that classification. During his tenure at Radnor he developed several players who moved on to play collegiate basketball.
Prior to leading Radnor, Coach Monahan was the head boys basketball coach at Fitzsimons High School in the Philadelphia Public League. In three seasons as head coach there, his teams made District playoffs every year, winning several games – all firsts for the small, all-boys school in North Philadelphia.
Coach Monahan also spent time working as an assistant coach at both the high school and college levels. He helped guide Germantown Academy to two Inter-Ac Championships in 2007 and 2008. He served in an assistant role at Chestnut Hill Academy for two seasons in 2005 and 2006. In 2003 and 2004 he worked as a graduate assistant for long time NBA player and coach Paul Westphal at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. There he was able to focus on player development, working with several players who were drafted to the NBA, spent time in the NBA, or who found successful careers in leagues in Europe.
Coach Monahan grew up in the Philadelphia area, playing in the Philadelphia Catholic League at Archbishop Wood, graduating in 1994. He has an Engineering degree from Lehigh University and an MBA from Pepperdine. Coach Monahan continues to work at Radnor High School as a Business Education teacher. He resides in Plymouth Meeting with his wife Jennifer, son Christopher (8), and daughter Tara (6).
