University of North Texas Vice President and director of athletics Wren Baker announced on Sunday that Tony Benford has been relieved of his duties as men’s basketball head coach effective immediately.

“After spending this season evaluating our men’s basketball program, we have determined that a change in leadership is necessary,” Baker said. “Tony and his staff have worked tirelessly for five seasons to help our student-athletes grow academically, socially and competitively. I am appreciative of those efforts. However, I believe we can compete for championships and, unfortunately, we have fallen short of those expectations. This is a highly attractive job that is located in one of the most talent-rich areas of the country and, in my opinion, the best region of the country to live in. I couldn’t be more excited about the future of the program.”

A national search for Benford’s replacement will begin immediately.

“We will be diligent in our process and will take the time required to find the right coach to lead this program and bring championships to UNT,” Baker said.

Benford, 52, has coached collegiately for 25 years, the last five at North Texas, which was his first head-coaching job. Under Benford, the Mean Green went 62-95. In Benford’s final season, North Texas posted a record of 8-22 and did not qualify for the Conference USA Tournament.
