Trent Howard Named Concord University Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach

Concord University Director of Athletics Kevin Garrett and head men’s basketball coach Todd May have announced Trent Howard as the next head men’s golf coach and assistant men’s basketball coach, the athletic department released Monday afternoon.

Howard comes to Concord after a two-year stint as a graduate assistant for the men’s basketball program at the University of Akron on head coach John Groce’s staff. Overall, Howard spent five seasons affiliated with Akron as he served as a team manager for the Zips the previous three seasons.

“I would like to thank Coach May and AD Kevin Garrett for providing me this opportunity. I’m extremely excited to help build upon the success that Coach May has been able to create both on and off the court at Concord University the last three years,” Howard said,

“This success has been founded on developing student-athletes into hard-working individuals willing to put the team before themselves. I’m proud and appreciative of the Concord family for their tremendous support throughout this process.”

Under Groce, Howard assumed a larger role which his main responsibilities included assisting with opponent scouting, player development, academics, and day-to-day operations. Previously, Howard served as a manager and practice squad player for three seasons under head coach Keith Dambrot.
“Trent comes from the University of Akron where he was part of a very successful program as a student manager and a graduate assistant under two very respected head coaches in Keith Dambrot, currently at Duquesne, and John Groce,” May said.

“He brings a tremendous work ethic and a ton of energy which will help our program maintain and build on our recent successes here at Concord!”

Howard joins May’s staff at CU after the departure of former assistant Adam Blake to the University of North Georgia in the same capacity. May and Howard will look to guide the Mountain Lions to a third straight winning season after going 20-10 in 2018-19 and appearing in the MEC Tournament Semifinals.

Though Concord will have to replace its top two scorers from last season including two-time All-American Tommy Bolte, the men’s basketball team returns five of its top seven scorers from last season.

The Upper Sandusky, Ohio native will take over a men’s golf program that appeared in the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional Tournament this spring and returns four of the top five golfers from the squad. The Mountain Lions made the regional tournament for the first time in four years.

Howard graduated magna cum laude with a political science degree from Akron in 2016 and completed his master of business administration (MBA) from the University in May 2019.

Prior to his time at Akron, Howard was a three-year letterwinner on varsity basketball team and varsity golf team at Upper Sandusky High School. He graduated in June 2013.
