Washington College head men’s basketball coach Aaron Goodman has announced the promotion of Alex Bates to full-time assistant coach. Bates worked as a volunteer assistant for the Shoremen last season.
“I am excited to announce the promotion of Alex Bates to our full-time assistant men’s basketball coach,” Goodman stated. “Last season, Alex worked in a volunteer capacity and did a tremendous job on the floor with player development, student-athlete relationship building, practice planning, academic support, and opponent scouting. He also continues to excel at recruiting in helping to bring in a strong 2017 class. In addition, Alex was instrumental in organizing many campus and community outreach programs. He is well deserved in this promotion and will continue to be a great asset to our program and athletic department family.”
A native of Greenbelt, Md., Bates spent the 2015-16 season as an assistant coach at his scholastic alma mater, Eleanor Roosevelt High School.
Bates began his collegiate playing career at Northeastern, where he played in 30 games over two seasons. He then transferred to Tennessee State where he played one season, making 12 starts in 29 games played, and finished his B.S. in Communications. He completed his eligibility by playing one season as a graduate student at East Tennessee State in 2014-15, making a career-best 15 starts in 25 games played.
The Washington College men’s basketball team is scheduled to open its 2017-18 season November 15th at Eastern Shore rival Salisbury University.
