Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) has announced Delton Deal as the new SAGU Men’s Basketball Head Coach. Deal will be heading to SAGU from York College in York, Nebraska.
For Coach Deal, coming to Waxahachie is like coming home, “I’m extremely excited for this new opportunity here at SAGU. This has always been a dream job of mine being from the metroplex. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to build on what SAGU has already established and I’m looking forward to helping grow the program through Christ and on the basketball court.”
“We believe Coach Deal is the perfect leader to take over for the Lions,” says Terry Phipps, SAGU Vice-President of Student Development, “Deal has had success at both the high school and college levels. Coach Bostwick left big shoes to fill and we believe Coach Deal can continue to grow the SAGU men’s basketball program for years to come.”
SAGU Athletic Director Jesse Godding acknowledges that hiring a coach to lead a perennial contender in the Sooner Athletic Conference as well as the NAIA National Tournament is no easy task, but he believes that Coach Deal is a perfect fit, “Coach Deal will serve our players and institution well as a leader who is intentional about spiritual formation. He is also a coach who has demonstrated a capacity to compete at a high level and has the recommendation and respect of his peers and former players. I am excited for our players and look forward to the impact Coach Deal will have on our team and campus as we step into a new era of SAGU men’s basketball,” explains Godding.
Over his past seven years as the head coach at York College, Deal led his team to the NAIA Division II tournament three times. In 2016, the Panthers made it to the Elite 8 in the National Tournament.
Upon taking over the Panthers in 2010, YC had only one winning season in school history. Deal led the Panthers to seven consecutive winning seasons.
Before York College, Deal coached at Bethesda Christian High School in Fort Worth, Texas. Over his four years at Bethesda he had a 97-28 record. In 2007 he won the TAPPS 3A State Championship and was named as the State Coach of the Year.
Coach Deal and his wife Jennifer have three children, Ashlynn, Camryn and Delton.
