There will be two familiar faces back on the sidelines with the Northeastern’s men’s basketball team this season as announced by head coach Bill Coen.
“We proudly welcome back two former members of our basketball family, Manny Adako and Danny Young,” said Coen. “Danny will serve as our new Operations Coordinator, while Manny will begin earning his Master’s Degree in Sports Leadership while serving as a graduate manager.”
“During his time as an undergraduate, Danny served as our head manager,” continued Coen. “His dedication, loyalty and commitment to excellence was evident daily. We could not be more excited to have him back, and I am certain he will have an immediate and positive impact on our program.”
Young enters his first season on the Northeastern coaching staff as Director of Basketball Operations after graduating as a Husky in 2015. Young will help guide the operations of the program, much like he did while a student at Northeastern.
As an undergrad, Young was the head manager for the Huskies and played a key role in helping Northeastern return to the NCAA Tournament in 2015 for the first time in 24 years.
Young was involved in all aspects of the operation including video, travel logistics and player assistance working under and learning from an esteemed group of coaches and staff while at Northeastern including current head coach Bill Coen; current UMass Lowell head coach Pat Duquette; current Dartmouth head coach, Dave McLaughlin; current video analyst for the Oklahoma City Thunder Steve Scalzi; and current Director of Performance for the Boston Celtics Art Horne.
While a student, Young also assisted Northeastern athletic director and NCAA men’s basketball selection committee member, Peter Roby, on all facets regarding Roby’s committee duties.
In 2013, while a student, Young was a Co-Founder and helped develop a company, The XO Project, with former Northeastern Assistant Coach and current Video Analyst for the Oklahoma City Thunder Steve Scalzi. The duo teamed up to assist rising basketball coaches all over the country build a library of plays, drills and speaking notes from some of the top coaches and teams in the game. In less than a year they generated thousands of website hits and YouTube followers.
A native of Riverdale, New York, Young earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Northeastern in 2015.
“Manny is in the process of transitioning from being a professional basketball player,” said Coen. “We are both honored and humbled, that he has chosen to come back home to help us. Without question, Manny was an outstanding player for us and part of a foundation for some very successful teams here at Northeastern. What many may not know was that Manny was simply an elite teammate. He has a natural compassion and care for others that is inspiring and transforming. Having Manny back is a tremendous addition for our program.”
Adako returns to his alma mater after a seven-year professional basketball career and enters his first season as a graduate manager at Northeastern University.
Adako made stops in Holland, Egypt, Qatar, and Dubai where he helped his teams to the Qatar Emir League Cup in 2014, as well as Qatar Prince’s Cup victories in 2015 and 2016. He has earned postseason accolades a total of five times in his career.
A CAA All-Conference honoree, Adako finished his career ranked 14th all-time at Northeastern in career scoring (1,209) and fourth in career field goal percentage (.541). During his time as a Husky, he posted the sixth and seventh-best seasons all-time from the field (.568 and .566).
Adako is a 2010 graduate of Northeastern.
