Springfield College head basketball coach Charlie Brock succeeded University of Kansas head coach Bill Self as president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) on Sunday night during the annual NABC convention, held in conjunction with the 2018 NCAA® Division I Men’s Final Four®.
Brock stepped into the role of president a little early as the veteran coach, who just completed his 20th season at Springfield, presided over NABC board of directors meetings and events while Self was busy coaching his Jayhawks in the Final Four.
A long-time member of the NABC board as a representative of NCAA Division III, Brock was the recipient of the NABC Guardians of the Game Award for advocacy in 2016 for his commitment to college basketball and the coaching profession. The former chair of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Committee was instrumental in the creation and promotion of the Reese’s® Division III All-Star game, held annually during the NCAA Division III championships. In that game, 20 of the nation’s top senior student-athletes in Division III play their final collegiate game on the championship floor prior to the Division III championship contest.
He has also been a strong advocate in developing honors to recognize men’s college basketball student-athletes for their success in the classroom, working closely with the NABC Committee on Academics. Brock is the facilitator of the Springfield College Pride’s Literacy Awards program, which is funded by the Springfield Office of Community Development. The purpose of this program is to promote the importance of reading to children, targeting first through third grades.
This season, Brock guided the Pride to the NCAA Division III Final Four in Salem, Virginia. Springfield, which finished the season with a 22-9 record and a 12-2 mark as the regular season champion in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference, reached the national semifinals before falling to the eventual national champion, Nebraska Wesleyan.
A Division III head coach for 38 seasons, Brock has led three different collegiate programs to NCAA tournament berths. He won his 500th career game in 2015. He has also maintained a long tradition of Springfield coaches who have lent their teaching skills to other countries and has traveled internationally to Venezuela, Taiwan, Japan and Estonia to teach the game of basketball to its citizens.
