Charlotte 49ers head men’s basketball coach Ron Sanchez has announced the hiring of Vic Sfera as assistant coach. Sfera comes to Charlotte after spending the last two seasons as assistant coach at Liberty University.
“Vic is a young coach with tremendous integrity,” Sanchez said. “He is a tireless worker who brings a wealth of experience to our coaching staff. He will be a great addition to the 49ers family.”
During his time on the coaching staff at Liberty, the Flames won 43 games, reached the 2018 Big South Conference Tournament Championship game and advanced to at least the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) in 2017 and 2018.
Prior to joining the coaching staff at Liberty, Sfera spent four seasons on the coaching staff at the University of Virginia. He spent two season as technology assistant from 2010-12. He returned to the Virginia coaching staff in 2014 where he spent two seasons as the director of scouting/recruiting. During his time at Virginia, the Cavaliers made three NCAA Tournament appearances and one trip to the Elite Eight and won an ACC regular-season championship. Between his two stints at Virginia, he spent two seasons (2012-14) as an assistant coach at Northern Arizona.
During his time at Northern Arizona, he helped the Lumberjacks advance to the Big Sky Conference Tournament each year and saw one of the biggest turnarounds in program history. He was primarily responsible for coaching the perimeter players, opponent scouting and recruiting.

In 2016, he was a member of the technical staff for the U16 Romanian national team and worked with the team during the 2016 FIBA European Championships. Sfera’s responsibilities included preparation, assisting the coaching staff with scouting and player development.
In 2010, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Memphis in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in behavioral sciences and sport studies. He earned his master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University in 2013. During his senior year at Memphis, he served as head team manager during the 2009-10 season.
The Southern California native began his collegiate coaching career as a student assistant coach and video coordinator under NAIA Hall of Fame coach Dr. Dave Holmquist at Biola University in La Mirada, California. He was involved in the Eagles’ game preparation, player development and recruiting efforts, and helped Biola advance to the 2009 NAIA National Tournament.
In 2006-07, he served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Capistrano Valley Christian School under San Diego High School Hall of Champions coach Randy Wright. Sfera also served as a head coach with the North Orange County Stars AAU program and assisted with the California Summer Pro League.
Sfera played collegiately at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, Calif., after prepping at Capistrano Valley Christian School where he was an All-Academy League selection and one of the top three-point shooters in the CIF-Southern Section
Sfera and his wife Rachel have a son, Lucas.
