Head men’s basketball coach Dr. Carson Cunningham has announced the hiring of Darnell Archey as an assistant coach for the University of the Incarnate Word men’s basketball program.

“Darnell is someone who I have known and respected for many years,” said Cunningham. “He sat on the Butler bench for its two national championship games and as a Butler player out of the Indiana high school ranks, he set shooting marks that still stand as national records.

“His work at South Alabama and Butler and his head coaching experience at the high school level in Indiana, as well as his playing career, have helped him develop into a fantastic hoops mind. He has great character and a wonderful family. I’m thrilled to welcome him to our coaching staff.”

Archey comes to UIW after spending five seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at South Alabama.

As the recruiting coordinator for the Jaguars, Archey helped land 2016-17 recruit Kevin Morris, who was the No. 5 star player in the state of Alabama and received a three-star rating by 247sports.com.

Archey helped Barrington Stevens III become the first Jaguar since 1989 to post an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.0 or better in a season. Stevens was the second person in program history to do this twice, accomplishing the feat during both his sophomore and junior seasons. Archey also guided Taishaun Johnson, who set school freshman records for points (414), free throws made (138) and free throws attempted (177) in 2014-15.

Prior to South Alabama, Archey spent four seasons as the coordinator of basketball operations at Butler.

Archey accumulated five years of coaching experience at the high school level, including three as head coach. He mentored two McDonald’s All-Americans and future all-conference performers in the ACC and Big Ten Conference before being hired at Butler, his alma mater.

The New Castle, Indiana, native was a four-year letterwinner at Butler, where he set several school records and played on three NCAA Tournament teams. He finished his career as the Bulldogs’ all-time leading 3-point shooter at the time (217) and set new school marks for free throw percentage in a season (97.3) and in a career (95.1). His free throw record was aided by his NCAA-record 85 consecutive makes at the charity stripe, set over parts of three seasons.

Archey earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Butler in 2003. He received his teaching license in 2006 from Indiana Wesleyan.

Archey and his wife, Amanda, have two daughters, Allie and Ava.
