Sanders Promoted to Western Carolina Men’s Basketball Associate Head Coach

Western Carolina head men’s basketball coach Mark Prosser announced today the promotion of Monty Sanders to associate head coach.

“Monty has been an extremely valuable member of our program over the past year,” Prosser stated. “He is a tremendous leader and mentor to our student-athletes as well as a terrific coach who has worked extremely hard to move our program forward. He is an elite evaluator of talent and a passionate recruiter. He also possesses a unique knowledge and understanding of both the Southern Conference and recruiting our home state of North Carolina. I’m excited to see his continual grown and impact on our program over the next several years.”

Sanders joined Prosser’s staff prior to their inaugural season in 2018-19. In addition to working primarily with the team’s post players, Sanders functions as the team’s offensive coordinator among other responsibilities.

“I’m extremely grateful and humbled by the confidence Coach Prosser has in me. I am honored to do what I love here at a place like Western Carolina for a coach like Mark Prosser. I’m looking forward to working with our returning players and new recruits as we continue to build the Western Carolina basketball program.”

Before arriving in Cullowhee, Sanders was a member of the Elon men’s basketball coaching staff for eight seasons with his first three years spent in operations prior to a promotion to an assistant coach prior to the 2013 season.

A 2009 graduate of Elon, Sanders began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the boys’ varsity basketball team at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, N.C.
