John Rillie has been promoted to Associate Head Coach of the UC Santa Barbara men’s basketball program, head coach Joe Pasternack announced.
“John did a great job for us this past year,” Pasternack said. “His loyalty and experience in recruiting have made him invaluable to our program. He is a big part of our player development and on-court coaching in addition to his recruiting abilities, and he has absolutely earned this.”
Rillie spent the 2017-18 season as an Assistant Coach on Pasternack’s first UCSB coaching staff, helping to guide the team to a school record 23 wins, a 17-win improvement over the 2016-17 season, tying the NCAA Division I record for increase in wins from one season to the next. The Gauchos also placed three players on the All-Big West Conference Team.
“I can’t thank Coach Pasternack enough for the faith that he has shown in me and the rest of the coaching staff as we help him build his vision for this program,” Rillie Said.
In terms of recruiting, the Gauchos signed Amadou Sow and Sékou Toure, both out of Napa’s Prolific Prep Academy, and Jay Nagle, out of Will C. Wood High School in Vacaville, to National Letters of Intent in the fall signing period. In April, they added Oregon State transfer JaQuori McLaughlin and Robinson Idehen, a transfer from Trinity Valley Community College in Texas. Additionally, Devearl Ramsey, a transfer from Nevada, and Zack Moore, a transfer from Seattle University, redshirted the 2017-18 season and will be available in 2018-19.
Rillie, a native of Australia, came to UCSB in May of 2017 after spending six seasons as an assistant coach at Boise State. He is a graduate of Gonzaga University where he played for three seasons.
