Long Beach State men’s basketball coach Dan Monson has announced some key changes to his coaching staff for the upcoming season. Assistant coach Myke Scholl has been promoted to Associate Head Coach, former LBSU assistant and longtime Division I head coach Bobby Braswell has returned to the Beach as an assistant coach, and former graduate manager Jerry Woods has been hired as the new Director of Basketball Operations.
“I am excited to announce the completion of our staff for the upcoming season,” said Monson, who is entering his 12th season at Long Beach State. “I am confident that this staff will recruit and develop student athletes to represent the Beach in a first class manner as well as leading Beach Basketball back to the top of the Big West Conference.”
Scholl is entering his fifth season at Long Beach State, where he has served as an assistant coach on Monson’s staff. He came to the Beach in 2014 from Loyola Marymount, where he served as Associate Head Coach for the Lions.
“First, and foremost, I have promoted Myke Scholl to the Associate Head Coach position,” Monson said. “In his four years at the Beach, Coach Scholl has proven himself as a great recruiter, has developed players on and off the court, has been a man of great integrity who sincerely cares about our student-athletes and the welfare of this program. Coach Scholl’s loyalty and basketball mind are unquestioned, and he is someone I trust explicitly as my right hand man.”
In conjunction with Scholl’s promotion, longtime coach Bobby Braswell will return to Long Beach State as an assistant coach. Braswell was an assistant at LBSU from 1989-92 under head coaches Joe Harrington and Seth Greenberg, and was instrumental in the resurgence of Beach Basketball in the early 90’s.
Braswell went on to coach at Oregon, where he was an assistant for four years before getting his first Division I head coaching job at his alma mater, CSUN. During his 17-year head coaching tenure with the Matadors, Braswell was a three-time conference Coach of the Year and made a pair of trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2001 and 2009. His most recent coaching stop was at UTEP, where he served as an assistant coach with the Miners.
“I am excited to add Bobby Braswell as an assistant coach to work alongside Senque Carey in the same capacity,” said Monson of the hire. “Coach Braswell brings tremendous experience in all facets of the job, as well as familiarity with the university and community from his days as an assistant here in the 1990’s. He is someone I have competed against and have great respect for as a coach as well as a person. I am excited for his input and fresh ideas that he can bring to help us elevate to the next level. I anticipate Coach Braswell to make an immediate impact on the defensive side of the ball for us.”
Finally, Coach Monson announced that Jerry Woods will be the team’s new Director of Baseball Operations, continuing his involvement with the program in an expanded role.
“The final addition to our staff is the hiring of Jerry Woods as our Director of Basketball Operations,” Monson said. “Jerry has been a graduate student the last two years at the Beach, along with serving in our program as a graduate manager. Jerry understands our program and how it is run. He should make a seamless transition into this role, and we are fortunate to have someone of his abilities already in the program who can step in and do a great job from the outset.”
