Johnny Carpenter has been elevated to director of player personnel on Tony Bennett’s staff at the University of Virginia. Carpenter served as a technology assistant for three seasons at UVA from 2015-18.
Carpenter returned to Charlottesville in 2015 after a one-year stint as an assistant video coordinator with the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks in 2014-15. Before that, he served for four seasons as a team manager for the Virginia men’s basketball program from 2010-13. He worked as the head manager during the 2012-13 season and was the recipient of the Bob Goodman Award for service to the University of Virginia athletics department.
Carpenter worked as a graduate assistant coach with the Virginia women’s basketball team in 2013-14, assisting the team in film editing and breakdown, scouting and budgeting.
As the assistant video coordinator with the Mavericks in 2014-15, Carpenter assisted in film editing and breakdown, opponent and self-scouting, and statistical analysis. He worked closely with Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle and assisted in player development workouts for Mavericks’ players including Dirk Nowitzki, Tyson Chandler and Chandler Parsons.
A native of Great Falls, Va., Carpenter graduated from the University of Virginia in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in foreign affairs. He earned his master’s degree in higher education administration from UVA in 2014.
