Mike Byrne joined the New York Tech men’s basketball coaching staff in September 2019.
He previously served as an assistant coach for two seasons
at Rutgers-Newark. There, he developed three 1,000-point scorers and
contributed to a doubling of the win total and ECAC championship final
berth.
Byrne played prep basketball at Bergen Catholic High School and
Wood-Ridge High School in New Jersey. He played collegiately for Bergen
Community Community College and Farmingdale State.
He then served as head assistant varsity coach at Bergen Catholic High
School for three years before taking over as JV coach, where he led his
team to a 23-3 record. There, he mentored players who went on to play at
Division I programs including Kentucky, Xavier, Fairfield, Columbia,
George Washington, Quinnipiac, Boston University, St. Joseph’s and
Eastern Michigan, with others committed to receiving offers to programs
including Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Butler, Brown and Princeton.
In 2016, Byrne was appointed the associate head coach for the
Dwight-Englewood High School Bulldogs. He helped that team to its best
season in school history, going 24-5 before losing in the state
sectional semifinals to eventual-state champion Hudson Catholic. In his
lone season there, his players went on to play collegiately at Wichita
State, Merrimack, Hunter College, Sarah Lawrence and Stevens.
Byrne has worked several Hoop Group events such as Hoop Group Elite,
Future All-American, Philly and Metro Top 100s as well as the NJ Elite
Exposure Tour. The New Jersey native also has served as head
trainer/clinician for the Hoop Dreamz AAU program since 2010. He worked
with several pros as well as more than 50 Division I players and
countless other Division II and III student-athletes.
