The Western Illinois University athletic department will not renew the contract of head men’s basketball coach Billy Wright, Director of Athletics Danielle Surprenant announced Tuesday (March 3).

“We want to thank Billy for his commitment and service to our men’s basketball program and the University,” Surprenant said. “We appreciate his contributions over the last six seasons and wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Wright was named head coach in April of 2014, after previous stints as Western’s assistant and associate head coach from 2008-13. He went 53-115 at the helm of the program.

A national search for the next Western Illinois​ head​ men’s basketball coach will begin immediately.
