UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero has decided to terminate the contract of head basketball coach Steve Alford. This was first reported by Seth Davis late last night. An official announcement is expected sometime today.
The firing comes about 24 hours after the Bruins 73-58 home loss to Liberty, their fourth loss in a row. UCLA was 7-6 so far on the season, and Alford wraps up his tenure with a 124-63 record at the school. His best season came in 2016-17 when he led the Bruins to a 31-5 mark.
Rumors started flying early Sunday morning about Alford’s future after Guerrero sent a statement to donors which in part read that believes the basketball program has fallen “short of expectations,” and that his evaluation of the program is “on-going.”
More on this later today after the official announcement is made.
