Beard Announces High Octane Basketball Staff at Texas

Texas Head Men’s Basketball Coach Chris Beard announced his three assistant coaches, Managing Director and Special Assistant to the Head Coach on Thursday. Among the five positions officially announced today, the staff has a combined 97 years of coaching experience who have coached in 37 NCAA Tournaments and developed 42 NBA Draft picks.

The five-person staff has made a total of 13 NCAA Sweet 16, nine Elite Eight and two Final Four appearances. The group also has extensive experience in the state of Texas as well as the Big 12 Conference, including two staffers who have a combined 21 years of experience working for Texas Basketball.

A former head coach at UTEP and Fresno State for the previous 10 seasons, Rodney Terry will be an Associate Head Coach. Terry brings 26 years of collegiate coaching experience to the Texas staff, including nine as an assistant previously with the Longhorns from 2002-11. He has made 12 appearances in the NCAA Tournament and produced 14 NBA Draft selections. During his nine years at UT, the Longhorns posted an overall mark of 232-80 (.744) and made nine NCAA Tourney appearances, highlighted by four trips to the Sweet 16, three Elite Eights and one Final Four (2003). The Longhorns had 13 players chosen in the NBA Draft in the nine seasons with Terry, including nine first-round selections and five lottery picks.

Jerrance Howard, formerly an assistant coach at the University of Kansas for the last eight years, will serve as an Assistant Coach. Howard brings 17 years of collegiate coaching experience to the UT staff and has made nine NCAA Tournament appearances and developed 12 NBA Draft picks. During his eight seasons at Kansas, he helped the Jayhawks claim six Big 12 Conference regular-season championship crowns and make seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including three consecutive trips to the Elite Eight (2016-18) and one to the Final Four in 2018. Kansas registered an overall mark of 222-59 (.790) during those eight years, including a 112-32 (.778) mark in Big 12 play. The Jayhawks had nine players chosen in the NBA Draft in the eight seasons with Howard, including five first-round selections and three lottery picks. Howard previously served as an assistant coach at SMU (2012-13) and Illinois (2007-12) and worked on the staff at Texas A&M (2004-07).

An assistant coach under Chris Beard at Texas Tech for the previous two seasons who brings extensive collegiate coaching and recruiting experience in the state of Texas, Ulric Maligi will serve as an Assistant Coach. Maligi brings 14 years of collegiate coaching experience to the UT staff and has made four NCAA Tournament appearances and developed five NBA Draft picks. He was instrumental in Texas Tech securing a recruiting class in 2020 that ranked No. 7 nationally by Rivals and No. 9 by 247 Sports. Maligi worked as an assistant coach at Texas A&M (2016-19), helping the Aggies reach the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2018. He also spent time as an assistant coach at SMU (2012-15), Houston (2010-12), Stephen F. Austin (2007-10) and UTA (2006-07).

A former University of Texas player and assistant coach who spent the last three years as head coach at UTA, Chris Ogden will be Managing Director. Ogden brings 18 years of collegiate coaching experience to the UT staff and has made 11 NCAA Tournament appearances and developed eight NBA Draft picks. Following his first year at UTA (2018-19), he was named the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year and the NABC District 24 Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Hugh Durham Award (nation’s top mid-major coach) and the Joe B. Hall Award (top first-year head coach in Division I). Ogden was an assistant coach under Chris Beard at Texas Tech (2016-18), helping the Red Raiders advance to the 2018 NCAA Elite Eight. He also was an assistant coach at Tennessee (2015-16) and served 12 years on the coaching staff at Texas (2003-15). In his seven years as a full-time assistant at Texas (2008-15), Ogden helped the Longhorns post a 155-87 (.640) record and make six NCAA Tournament appearances. Six McDonald’s All-Americans played at Texas in that seven-year period, and seven players had their names called during the NBA Draft, including six first-round picks. Ogden was the captain on UT’s 2003 Final Four team.

An experienced coach at the professional, international and collegiate levels who worked on the staff under Chris Beard at Texas Tech the past two seasons, Bob Donewald Jr. will serve as Special Assistant to the Head Coach. Donewald brings 22 years of coaching experience to the UT staff and has made one NCAA Tournament appearance and developed three NBA Draft picks. He has been a head coach for professional teams in Russia, China, Ukraine, Brazil and Great Britain and spent three years as the head coach of the Chinese National Team (2010-12), including leading the squad at the 2012 London Olympics. Donewald served as the head coach for the Iowa Energy in the NBA D-League (2014-16) and was an assistant coach in the NBA for the Cleveland Cavaliers (2003-04) during LeBron James’ rookie season, the New Orleans Hornets (2002-03) and Charlotte Hornets (2001-02). In addition to his time at Texas Tech, he also worked as an assistant coach at UAB (2007-08) and Morehead State (1994-96).
