Tim Marrion has been hired as Assistant Coach of the University of Idaho men’s basketball team, head coach Zac Claus announced today.

I am personally very excited to work once again with Coach Claus, one of my favorite people,” said Marrion. “I am eager to hit the ground running and am looking forward to help move the needle of Vandal basketball forward in any way possible. Go Vandals!”
 
“We are thrilled to add Tim to our staff and he will be a wonderful addition to our program as a whole. I have the utmost confidence in his ability to impact the guys both on and off the court,” said coach Claus. “Having had the chance to work alongside Tim previously, I am more than aware of his work ethic, talent, and integrity. We can’t wait to have Sofia, Gia, and Del join us here in Moscow.”
 
Marrion was previously with the Vandals in 2015-16, acting as the director of basketball operations. The Idaho squad in 2015-16 finished 21-13 and went to the College Basketball Invitational. He returns to Idaho from San Jose State where he spent the previous two seasons as an Assistant Coach. In 2020-21, the Spartans had the Mountain West’s top scorer.
 
Prior to SJSU, Marrion spent three seasons in a third stint at Washington State. He first was with the Cougars from 2009-2012 and he returned for the 2013-14 season after coaching at San Jose State during the 2012-13 season. During his time at WSU, Marrion acted as the director of player development, academic liaison, coordinator of basketball operations, and assistant coach.
 
Marrion began his coaching career at San Jose State. When he was named an assistant coach for the 2007-08 season, it was believed that he was the youngest full-time assistant coach in NCAA Division I men’s basketball.
 
Immediately preceding his first stint at Idaho, Marrion was the associate head coach at Clark College, helping guide the Penguins to the Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament Championship and a 25-6 record.
 
During his coaching career, Mariron has helped develop nine current and former NBA players including Klay Thompson.
 
Marrion received his bachelor’s degree in sport management with a minor in leadership studies from Washington State in just three years, graduating in 2006.  He earned his master’s degree in sports leadership from Duquesne University in 2014.
 
Originally from Nottingham, England, Marrion lived in Melbourne, Australia for six years before moving to the United States, where he graduated from St. Francis High School in Mountain View, Calif., in 2003.  Marrion and his wife, Sofia, were married in the spring of 2013.
