Indiana State head basketball coach Josh Schertz has filled out his coaching staff after announcing the addition of Bryston Williams Tuesday, June 1.
“We are certainly thrilled to add a coach and more importantly a person of Bryston’s caliber to our staff. I think the formula for success here at Indiana State is very similar to what it was at Lincoln Memorial in that two key components have to be your development of players along with building a culture that is both conducive to success and one that people want to be a part of,” Schertz said of Williams. “Indiana State basketball got a lot better today as Bryston will massively impact those two areas with his expertise and energy. I look forward to working alongside of and learning from Matthew, Zak and Bryston as we build our program here at ISU.”
Williams brings over five years of experience from the NBA after serving as a player development coach during his time with the Pistons as well as a year as an assistant coach with the Memphis Hustle during the 2017-18 season and the Iowa Energy in 2016-17 — both G League affiliates of the Memphis Grizzlies.
“I’m very grateful for the opportunity that coach Schertz has given me to be a part of the Indiana State coaching staff and have the ability to learn from someone who has had as much success as he has,” Williams said. “I’m excited for my family and I to learn about and become part of the Terre Haute community. I look forward to helping our student athletes become responsible and productive young men of our society through this game of basketball.”
Williams comes to Terre Haute after spending the last three years as an assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons. His duties with the Pistons included developing the team’s mechanical shooting program, pre and post practice workouts, film breakdown and post-game reports.
Prior to moving to the NBA as an assistant, Williams spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Northwest Missouri State University. During his playing career with the Bearcats, Williams saw action in 112 games, including 71 starts. In 2009-10, Williams was the first freshman to start the season opener in 15 years within the program.
