Sean Hanna Named ESU Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach

Former East Stroudsburg University men’s basketball graduate assistant Sean Hanna is returning to ESU as the Warriors assistant coach, head men’s basketball coach Jeff Wilson announced on Wednesday.

“I am beyond excited to rejoin the men’s basketball program at ESU,” Hanna said about his new position. “I want to thank President Long, Dr. Gray and Coach Wilson for giving me this opportunity. Being at ESU from 2017-2019, I’ve witnessed the time and effort the administration, coaching staff and faculty puts in to ensure their student-athletes are getting the best experience possible. I am looking forward to helping continue the winning tradition Coach Wilson has established with ESU men’s basketball and to work with him to achieve more success in the future!”

Since graduating with a master’s degree from ESU in 2019, Hanna served as the director of basketball operations at Division I Lafayette College. Over the past two seasons, he helped the Leopards to the program’s first back-to-back winning seasons since 2000. His responsibilities included coordinating film, game scheduling, academics, and managing team travel. He was recently promoted to assistant coach prior to accepting the role at ESU.

As a GA, Hanna helped the Warriors to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths (2018 and 2019) along with the program’s first Atlantic Region title and Elite Eight appearance in 2018 during his tenure in the Poconos. ESU posted a 48-14 record during that span, with the Warriors claiming PSAC East Regular Season Championships during both campaigns. He specifically helped with academics and underclassmen recruiting, among other responsibilities.

“I am very pleased to announce Sean Hanna as the full-time assistant coach for our program,” said ESU men’s basketball head coach Jeff Wilson. “Sean has tremendous contacts in Atlantic Region and in particular the eastern portion of Pennsylvania. His familiarity with our program will allow him to hit the ground running and help us prepare for the 2021-2022 season. I feel this is a great hire for our program and look forward to working with him!”

As a student-athlete at Moravian College, Hanna averaged 10.2 points per game during his senior year, ranking second on the team in assists and steals. The guard distributed 213 assists in his career, which ranks 10th all-time in program history. Hanna served as a captain for former ESU assistant coach Justin Potts for two seasons in Bethlehem.

Hanna replaces Muhamadou Kaba, who was named the head men’s basketball coach at Delaware Valley University in May.

A native of Philadelphia, Hanna earned a bachelor’s degree from Moravian in sports management in 2017 and a master’s degree in exercise science from ESU in 2019.
