With Donnie Jackson set to begin his first season as head coach of the Cowley College men’s basketball team, he set out to find a top assistant coach to help him during the upcoming season. Jackson found that person in Roybell Baez.
Baez spent this past season with the Laramie County Golden Eagles men’s basketball program where he helped the squad capture the Region IX regular season title. Prior to that he spent the previous four seasons as an assistant coach at Western Nebraska Community College.
“Roybell will bring a lot of energy and a blue collar work ethic to the program,” coach Jackson said. “He will also bring a wealth of recruiting experience and has been at other winning programs. I am looking forward to having him with me at Cowley.”
While at Western Nebraska, Baez helped the Cougars to their first Region IX title in 17 years and a bid to the NJCAA DI National Tournament while helping nine student-athletes advance onto four-year institutions. Baez helped in all aspects of recruiting while with the Cougars while organizing community service for the WNCC program and maintaining its social media presence.
Baez played basketball at Dakota College at Bottineau before transferring to Dickinson State University in North Dakota where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He is a native of Miami, Florida.
Baez will look to help the Tigers continue their recent run of success which culminated in Cowley finishing as the 2021 national runner-up.
“Coach Jackson is the reason I came to Cowley,” Baez said. “I am a JUCO junky, and watched Cowley play at the NJCAA Championship. I will try to bring energy and a positive attitude to the program. I love recruiting and getting to coach kids we bring into the program. What I do is for the kids, I want to try and pay it back.”
