Drew Metz Hired as Marist College Director of Men’s Basketball Operations

Marist head men’s basketball coach John Dunne has announced the hiring of Drew Metz as Director of Men’s Basketball Operations.

For the past five years, Metz has worked as an assistant coach at Long Island Lutheran High School while serving as program director and 17U coach of the New York Jayhawks AAU program. He helped lead Long Island Lutheran to the state Class AA Federation championship in 2019, and a Top-25 ranking each of the last four years. With the Jayhawks, he oversaw the recruitment process for over 50 student-athletes.

“I am extremely excited and grateful for the opportunity to join Coach John Dunne and his incredible staff here at Marist College,” Metz said. “Coach Dunne and his staff have been doing an excellent job building a foundation that will help this program be a sustainable winner in college basketball. I take great pride in the development of young men, building relationships, and striving for excellence within my role. I am looking forward to being a member of this basketball family and joining the Marist College community!”

Metz earned both his Bachelor’s (2014) and Master’s (2016) degrees from St. John’s University in Sports Management. He worked as a manager and administrative assistant for the Red Storm’s men’s basketball program from 2011-15 under head coach Steve Lavin.

Metz’s experiences have allowed him to build solid relationships, develop a thorough understanding of program operations, and develop a strong comprehension of NCAA compliance rules.

“Drew has all the qualities I was looking for in this position,” Dunne said. “He’s organized, detailed, works well with people, and is strong at relationship-building. He played a major role in day-to-day operations for the New York Jayhawks, as well as having a coaching background for the Jayhawks and Long Island Lutheran. These experiences will serve him well in his new role.”

The hiring of Metz completes Dunne’s staff for the 2021-22 season. Metz fills the position vacated by Dorian Long, who was recently promoted to assistant coach. Kevin Driscoll and Dalip Bhatia will each return for their fourth seasons as assistant coaches.

The Marist men’s basketball program will be entering its fourth season under Dunne’s leadership in 2021-22. Last season, the Red Foxes had their best winning percentage in 14 years.
