After 40 seasons as a head coach, Dean College’s Rico Cabral has announced that he will retire from coaching.

Over his career Cabral owns an overall record of 576-403. During his seven seasons at the helm at Dean, Cabral amassed a 105-54 record. In his first season, the Bulldogs captured the Region 21 Championship. Prior to his arrival at Dean, Cabral was the head coach for 22 seasons at Mount Ida College. The Mustangs went 281-238 during his tenure, capturing 7 region 21 championships and 1 NAC championship in 1990-2000, the schools first year as an NCAA D3 member. He remains the schools all time winningest coach. Cabral won 6 region 21 coach of the year awards and one NAC coach of the year award in 2000.

Prior to his time at Mount Ida, Cabral spent 5 seasons stalking the sidelines at Massasoit CC. His teams went a combined 108-50 and won 20 or more games in four of those five seasons. Cabral also served as an assistant coach at Boston College, Saint Bonaventure, and Emerson College under Hall of Fame coach Jim O’Brien.

A former two-sport star at Massasoit CC from 1969-1971, Cabral then moved on to Boston State to play for Boston Celtics Hall of Famer Jim Loscutoff, serving as team captain in 1976. Cabral has been enshrined into several Halls of Fame, including Sharon HS, Massasoit CC, Mount Ida, and the New England Basketball HOF.

An official announcement from Dean on Cabral’s retirement is expected tomorrow.
