The University of Dubuque men’s basketball program has announced the hiring of Chris MacMartin as an assistant coach to fill out Robbie Sieverding‘s coaching staff.
Chris MacMartin joins the UD Men’s basketball program after seven years on staff at Northern Illinois University. MacMartin served as an assistant coach at NIU in 2020-21, following one season as the Director of Player Development and Operations with the Huskies. MacMartin moved into a full-time role following two years as NIU’s video coordinator/graduate assistant from 2017 to 2019. He joined the NIU basketball program in 2014 as a student manager, working for the Huskies for three years as an undergraduate.
“I am very grateful to Coach Sieverding, Dan Runkle, and the Administration and am more than excited to be joining the Spartan family,” said Chris MacMartin. “UD is a great institution and I’m looking forward to joining a program that just made history going 14-0 last season. I’m ready to get to work and can’t wait to help mentor and develop our student-athletes both in the classroom and on the court.”
During MacMartin’s time at NIU, the Huskies posted three seasons which rank among the top-seven for single-season wins at NIU, earning 21 victories in 2015-16 (tied for second-best), 18 wins in 2019-20 (sixth-best) and 17 wins in 2018-19 (tied for seventh-best). NIU captured a share of the MAC West Division title in the 2019-2020 season. That year, the Huskies earned a first-round tournament bye for the first time since 2006. As a graduate assistant, MacMartin helped the Huskies to a 17-win season in 2018-19, while reaching the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2003.
MacMartin helped mentor Eugene German to a remarkable senior season in which he led the MAC in scoring, became NIU’s all-time leading scorer with 2,203 points and became just the eighth player in program history to earn All-America recognition when he was named to the Lou Henson All-America Team. German also earned First Team All-MAC and First Team NABC All-District honors.
“We are excited to welcome Chris into our Spartan family. I look forward to working with Chris and continuing to develop our student-athletes on and off the court,” commented UD head coach Robbie Sieverding. “Chris has a passion for the game of basketball and we believe he will be a great fit for our program.”
A native of Rockton, Ill., MacMartin earned his bachelor’s degree in Community Leadership and Civil Engagement from NIU in 2017 and his master’s degree in Adult and Higher Education in 2019.
