Borne named Associate Head Basketball Coach at Alcorn State

Alcorn State University has named Marco Borne as its men’s basketball associate head coach. The veteran leader will play an integral role in various facets of the program as the lead assistant for the team.

“I am truly excited to announce the hiring of Coach Borne,” said director of intercollegiate athletics Derek Horne. “He brings a passion and enthusiasm to the game that is contagious. We believe that he is an outstanding coach and look forward to seeing him help us rebuild our men’s basketball program. I am confident he will ensure our student-athletes will be the best they can be moving forward.” 

The New Orleans, Louisiana native joins the Braves’ coaching staff after a three-year stint as the head coach of the 16-U Haitian Federation of International basketball team, while assisting the Haitian national team as they attempted to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.

“I’m proud, thankful, humbled and appreciative of being named the men’s basketball associate head coach for Alcorn State,” Borne said. “Head coach Landon Bussie has done an amazing job building the foundation of this program, and it will be the responsibility of our staff and players to continue that progress.  I greatly appreciate the support of the administration, and look forward to working to make this basketball program the best it can be.”

Borne’s 16-U squad finished second during the FIBA Centrobasket Championship in Hermosillo, Mexico (2019).  Before Haiti, Borne served as the head coach of Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in Dallas, TX. Under his guidance the Mustangs were recognized as the best turnaround program in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in 2018. Prior to his years at Roosevelt, Borne served as the head coach at Paul Quinn College. There, he was named Red River Coach of the Year in 2011, led the team to 21 wins and a top-15 NAIA national ranking.  

Borne’s head coaching career began in 2000 at his alma mater, Dillard University. While at Dillard, Borne became the first coach in the university’s history to lead three consecutive teams to the NAIA national tournament. He is only the fourth coach in NAIA history to upset the top-seeded team in the first round of the NAIA national tournament. The Kansas City Star named the upset one of the 32 greatest moments in the history of the NAIA national tournament.

Borne’s Dillard teams won the university’s first Gulf Coast Athletic Conference tournament championship and captured the conference title in 2001. He was also named GCAC Coach of The Year (2001), and Louisiana Small College Coach of The Year (2001). Dillard arguably had the most successful run in program history under his leadership Those accomplishments led Borne and his team to be inducted into the Dillard University Hall of Fame (2019). 

Borne brings with him 19 years of knowledge and success. He holds a 73% overall winning percentage to along with a 100% graduation rate. Borne has led five different programs to historical record-breaking seasons, including a Louisiana high school state championship (2008).

Borne is highly respected in the coaching fraternity and brings a wealth of international relations having coached in Haiti, Poland, Puerto Rico, Barbados and U.S. Virgin, in addition to his connections in Louisiana and Texas.

The coaching veteran is married to Genean Borne and holds a Master of Education degree from the University of New Orleans (2006) and a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Dillard University (2003) where he was a four-year basketball letterman.
