A few mid-week rumors…….

A few quick rumors that I’ve heard over the past few days…..

There are no shortage of names trying to get involved with the Wagner job. The most interesting is former Fordham Head Coach Dereck Whittenburg. He was the head coach at Wagner before he took the Fordham job in 2003. He went 66-50 in his four seasons at Wagner, and was very well liked on campus. Another interesting name is current Fordham Interim Head Coach Jared Grasso. If he doesn’t keep the Fordham job, he could be a pretty good choice here. He has received a bunch of commitments at Fordham, but they are currently on a 19 game losing streak, and have won one game since he took over . Other names being mentioned are NJ prep coaches Danny Hurley (St. Benedict’s) and Kevin Boyle (St. Pat’s), and NJIT Head Coach Jim Engles.

There is a lot of speculation about the future of Tom Penders at Houston. Here’s a pretty interesting article – it seems that maybe UH can’t afford to buy him out right now…..

If Houston doesn’t open, look for Billy Gillispie to be a target at Iowa State. There are a ton of rumors going around that after a 14-16 (3-12 Big 12) record, that Greg McDermott may be in trouble at Iowa State.

Not sure what’s going on at DePaul. Rumor has it that the AD wants the new coach to retain the entire staff. The staff was hired this past summer (under former coach Jerry Wainwright), and they all have local ties. This seems to have turned some coaches away from DePaul already. Chicago native Craig Robinson re-signed at Oregon State yesterday. Apparently he explored the DePaul possibility to some extent, but decided to remain at OSU.

DII New haven opened up yesterday when Head Coach Al Seibert resigned. This is an interesting one, because New Haven is re-classifying to DI. This could be a pretty good job for an up-and-coming guy with NYC ties who wants to get after it.
