Byron Jones and Cody San Miguel have joined the Air Force men’s basketball staff. Jones, who will be an assistant coach, comes to the Academy from Fresno State. San Miguel, who will be an assistant coach/video coordinator, comes from Talladega College.
Jones, a veteran with over two decades of coaching experience in the collegiate ranks, spent seven seasons as an assistant with Fresno State. During his tenure with the Bulldogs, Jones helped the program win over 126 games and average 22 wins per season in his last three seasons in Fresno. Jones was a key part of the staff that coached the Bulldogs to a second place finish in the Mountain West Conference, giving the Bulldogs their highest seed for a conference tournament since 2001 and guided the program back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001. Jones also served as interim head coach at Fresno State for two months in 2018.
Jones, who’s coaching background goes back to the early 1990’s, is no stranger to the state of Colorado, having coached at the University of Denver from 1997-2002. At Denver, Jones was part of the coaching staff that transitioned the Pioneers from Div. II to Div. I in men’s basketball. Jones has also held coaching positions at Winston-Salem State, North Carolina-Wilmington, Eastern Kentucky and Central Oklahoma.
San Miguel served as an assistant coach at Talladega College in 2018-19, helping guide the Tornadoes to a 24-win season and a trip to the NAIA Div. I National Tournament.
Prior to his stint at Talladega College, San Miguel was on the staff at Texas State for three seasons from 2015-18. In the 2016-17 season, he helped Texas State finish 22-14 to achieve its first winning season in 14 years. The campaign also saw the Bobcats make its first postseason tournament appearance in 20 years with a berth in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament and reach the finals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, coming within a victory of making the NCAA Tournament.
Prior to Texas State, San Miguel served as the head coach at Hill Country Christian School in San Marcos, Texas, where he led the school to the second round of the TAPPS playoffs both years and an undefeated district record in 2014-15.
San Miguel served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2007-11, where he as an infantry team leader/company land navigator and was stationed at USMC Camp Pendleton, Calif.
