Alabama Huntsville Basketball Staff Update

New Alabama Huntsville head basketball coach John Shulman has named Anthony Komara, Spencer Palmer, and Elijah Garrison to his staff as assistant coaches. Komara and Spencer had previously served on Lennie Acuff’s staff at UAH, while Garrison just wrapped up his playing career for the Chargers.

Anthony Komara

Anthony Komara is entering his seventh season as an assistant with the Chargers.

During Komara’s time in Huntsville, the Chargers have reached the NCAA tournament four times including hosting a pair of South Regionals in which the team reached the regional final, have won two Gulf South Conference tournament titles, and have captured a pair of GSC regular season crowns.

With Komara on the staff, UAH has produced five All-South Region performers and 10 All-GSC selections, and two Chargers have been selected to play in the Division II All-Star Game during that time period.

Komara began his coaching career as a student-assistant video coordinator at Auburn in the 2009-10 season.

Komara graduated from Auburn with a bachelor’s in marketing in April of 2013 and earned his MBA from North Alabama in 2015.

Spencer Palmer

Spencer Palmer is entering his third season overall as an assistant for the Chargers following a four-year playing career on the Kelly Court at Spragins Hall hardwood.

Palmer spent a portion of the 2016-17 season with UAH and then worked for a year at Flagler before returning home to his alma mater for the 2018-19 campaign.

With Palmer on the sideline, UAH has advanced to a pair of NCAA tournaments including hosting the NCAA South Regional in 2017 following a GSC tournament title.

During Palmer’s playing career, the Chargers went 88-36 and won a GSC tournament championship in 2015. UAH went to three NCAA tournaments during his tenure, reaching the final in both 2013 and 2016, and Huntsville was the site of the 2016 regional. Strong in the classroom, Palmer was a three-time GSC Academic Honor Roll selection.

Palmer graduated from UAH with a bachelor’s in history in December of 2015.

Elijah Garrison

Elijah Garrison is in his first season as an assistant with the Chargers.

Garrison joins the coaching staff after spending four seasons in the Blue and White as a player.

During those four years, UAH won 91 games, earned three trips to the NCAA tournament, and picked up a GSC tournament title in addition to a GSC regular season crown. In 2015-16 and 2016-17, the Chargers hosted the NCAA South Regional and advanced to the title game in both years.

Garrison graduated from UAH in May of 2019 with a bachelor’s in exercise science.
