Thomas College Athletic Director David Roussel ’93 has announced the hiring of Darrell "Texas" Alexander ’10 as head men’s basketball coach.
Alexander, a native of Fairfield, Texas, returns to his alma mater after serving as an assistant coach at Smith College. As a member of the Pioneers’ coaching staff he helped the team reach their first ever NCAA appearance in program history, where they upset #8 University of Southern Maine, 80-53. Coach Alexander helped lead the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) 2012-13 Champions to a 23-5 (16-2 NEWMAC) record.
"In Coach Alexander, we have hired a person with great passion and enthusiasm for the sport of basketball and for Thomas College. As a graduate of Thomas College and former student-athlete, he knows the history of the school and the men’s basketball program," adds Roussel. "I am confident in Coach Alexander and know that he will have an immediate positive impact on our basketball program and that he will provide a great overall experience for our student-athletes."
Coach Alexander played four years at Thomas College under former Head Coach T.J. Maines. As a four year starter and three year captain "Texas" amassed 1,128 points, good for 19th overall in program history. His senior year helped lead the Terriers to a program-best 18-8 record and a trip to the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) semifinals. After finishing his collegiate career, Alexander was invited to multiple professional training camps.
Alexander earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Thomas in the spring of 2010.
Coach Alexander takes the program reigns from Jon Hayes, who stepped down after being named head coach last spring.
