Broward College Athletics Director Robert Deutschman announced the hiring of Anthony Q. Anderson as head men’s basketball coach. “I am delighted to have Anthony as our new men’s basketball coach. I believe he will do a great job leading our program.” Anderson has 25 years of coaching experience with 22 served at the NCAA Division I level. He is also the founder of the Louisiana Bluechips and Lady Bluechips AAU teams.
“I am excited to have this opportunity,” said Anderson, who replaces Bob Starkman after becoming interim head coach at Keiser University.
He faces the task of taking over a program that lacks experience due to having no returning starters from last year’s team. “I am in the process of building a team, but I expect a group of loyal guys with one common goal — to win on and off the floor.”
Anderson previously served as assistant coach for Central Connecticut State University. Prior to his assistant coaching career at CCSU, Anderson was instrumental in helping assemble successful and highly-regarded recruiting classes at Texas Christian University,
Southern Methodist University, University of Texas-Arlington, McNeese State University, Florida International University, University of Miami, University of New Orleans and Tulane University. In addition, he has served as the recruiting coordinator for six of the programs and secured impactful talent.
Before coming to CCSU, Anderson joined the Lamar University coaching staff in 2014-15. He was instrumental in helping the Cardinals post 15 wins in his first season with the program, an 11-win improvement over the previous season. He also helped mentor the 2014-15 Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year. Three student-athletes earned All-Southland Conference recognition during his two seasons at LU.
Anderson was the associate head coach at Florida International University under NBA Hall of Famer, Isiah Thomas. He helped sign the nation’s 30th-ranked recruiting class according to Hoop Scoop Inc. During his tenure at the University of Miami, he helped assemble a 2003 class that received top-10 recognition from Street & Smith’s. A combined five different players from those classes were either drafted or signed via free agency by NBA franchises.
In addition to achieving success on the court, Anderson has helped foster an outstanding commitment to academics producing successful individuals in the classroom. During his time at Southern Methodist University, the men’s basketball team posted an 89 percent graduation success rate, which was among the nation’s top 10 percent for men’s basketball programs, and ranked second among all Conference USA schools.
Anderson has two years of head coaching experience at the NAIA level, having led the program at Dillard University in New Orleans. He directed the Bleu Devils from 2006-08 before taking a position on the staff at Texas Christian University.
Anderson received his bachelor’s degree from McNeese State in 1995. He played two seasons for the Cowboys after graduating from Iowa Lakes Community College. He is a native of Milwaukee, Wisc. and Slidell, La.
