Former Maine assistant coach Antone Gray has been named an assistant men’s basketball coach at Brown in an announcement made by Bears’ head coach Mike Martin.

It’s a homecoming for Gray, who grew up in Providence, Rhode Island, playing at St. Raphael Academy and later at Rhode Island College.

“We’re thrilled to be able to add Antone to our coaching staff,” said Martin.  “At a young age, he’s already gained outstanding coaching experience working for Bob Walsh at Maine.   He was an outstanding player locally both at St. Raphael Academy and Rhode Island College and possesses all of the necessary qualities to be an outstanding coach.  His passion for teaching the game of basketball and influencing young men’s lives will be felt right away in our program. ”

Gray coached at Maine from 2014-18 under Walsh, whom he played for at Rhode Island College. He had on court coaching duties for the Black Bears, recruiting responsibilities, conducted team workouts and created scouting reports.

A 2014 graduate of Rhode Island College, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in sociology, Gray helped the Anchormen to four NCAA Tournament appearances and three Little East Conference Regular season titles. He ranks third in the program in assists (420) and is one of 30 other members in the Rhode Island College “1,000 point club” with 1,041 career points.

Gray began his varsity coaching career as the head varsity basketball coach at Juanita Sanchez Educational Complex in Providence, R.I. In his only season at the helm he guided his squad to a 19-8 overall record including an Interscholastic League Division III State Championship. Gray’s squad led one of the most prolific offenses in the state as his team led Rhode Island in points per game, averaging 89.7, and overall points with 1,418.
