Darnell Archey has resigned as the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Mobile. He will take over as the girls basketball coach at UMS-Wright. UMS-Wright is thrilled to announce the hiring of Darnell Archey as its next Girls’ Basketball Coach. Coach Archey brings 22 years of coaching experience at both the high school and collegiate levels.

A standout collegiate player, Archey competed at Butler University from 1999–2003. During his career, he helped lead the Bulldogs to four conference championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 run in 2003, where he earned East Regional All-Tournament Team honors. He set numerous school, conference, and NCAA records, including becoming the NCAA’s all-time record holder for consecutive free throws made (85), and he ranks second in Butler history in career three-point shooting. In 2003, he was also recognized as the NCAA Men’s Three-Point Champion. Following his collegiate career, Archey played professionally with Australian Select in 2003 and the Harlem Globetrotters in 2004.

Archey began his coaching career in the high school ranks, serving as head coach at Park Tudor School and Columbus North High School, and as an assistant and junior varsity coach at Carmel High School. He later transitioned to the collegiate level, serving as Director of Basketball Operations at Butler University from 2009–2013 under former Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens. During that time, Butler made back-to-back NCAA National Championship game appearances and Final Four runs in 2010 and 2011.

He went on to serve as an assistant coach at multiple collegiate programs, including Butler University, the University of South Alabama, and the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, where his teams excelled in free-throw shooting, ranking No. 1 in the nation.

Most recently, Archey served as head men’s basketball coach at the University of Mobile, where he guided the Rams to the NAIA National Tournament in 2025 and back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2024 and 2025.

Archey holds degrees from Butler University and Indiana Wesleyan. He is married to Amanda Archey, a faculty member in UMS-Wright’s lower school division, and they have two daughters, Allie (’26) and Ava (’29).
