Army head men’s basketball coach Zach Spiker unveiled the latest addition to the Black Knights’ coaching staff with the announcement that Quinton Ferrell will serve as an assistant coach. Ferrell, a six-year sideline veteran, will begin his duties immediately.
A native of North Augusta, S.C., Ferrell spent the 2012-13 season as assistant at The Citadel. He worked with the Bulldogs’ perimeter players while holding major responsibility in recruiting, opponent scouting and the monitoring of players’ academic progress. Ferrell mentored Citadel sophomore point guard Marshall Harris III who handed out 155 assists, the second most in program history.
"I am honored to be part of the Army basketball program and Coach Spiker’s staff," Ferrell said. "As a coach, it is a great opportunity to work at the best leadership development institution in the world. I am looking forward to helping this up-and-coming program take the next step and competing for Patriot League championships."
Prior to his tenure at The Citadel, Ferrell spent five years as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Presbyterian College. In addition to working with both perimeter and post players during his five seasons, he was responsible for a wide variety of tasks, including recruiting, scouting, team travel, equipment and academics. Ferrell helped the Blue Hose transition from Division II into the Division I ranks in 2007-08, and was part of the staff that engineered victories over Auburn, Wake Forest and 20th-ranked Cincinnati during his time in Clinton. He recruited the top two scorers in Presbyterian history, Khalid Mutakabbir (1,576 points) and Al’Lonzo Coleman (1,501 points), and helped Coleman earn All-Big South honors twice.
"Quinton is a great addition to our staff," Spiker said. "He brings tremendous energy and an attitude that our players will appreciate, both on and off the floor. Quinton has a proven track record of identifying and developing young talent, and we look forward to his contributions as we continue striving to make Army basketball a consistent championship contender."
Ferrell joined the coaching ranks after a standout playing career with the Blue Hose. A team captain as a senior, he led the team in assists and steals in each of his final two seasons and was named the program’s Most Valuable Defensive Player in each of those two campaigns. He was a two-time all-state performer at North Augusta High School, participating in the North Carolina/South Carolina All-Star Game after his senior season.
