Ashanti Gray has been named the assistant men’s basketball coach at Dillard, head coach Mike Newell announced today.
“We’re really excited to have Ashanti on the team,” Newell said. “I think he has a great future in this profession and he understands the game. I wanted to make sure we got someone that we can help teach the game and I look forward to what he’s going to grow into.”
Gray was at Mobile the past two seasons (2017-19), where he coached the 2017-18 Southern States Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year and two-time all-conference honoree Tony-Toni Wright. As a graduate assistant at Mobile, Gray was the assistant men’s basketball coach and assistant director of basketball operations.
“I am very excited and thankful for the opportunity to work and be a part of an exceptional basketball program,” Gray said. “The Dillard men’s basketball has a rich tradition of success and I’m looking forward to adding to that tradition. I am eager to get to work and help the program reach even higher heights.”
The Indianapolis, Indiana, native will assist in recruiting, scheduling, film exchange, team travel, budget, and player development for the Bleu Devils. He will also monitor the academic performance and progress of the men’s basketball student-athletes and make sure the program is in compliance with the NAIA and GCAC.
Prior to his time at Mobile, Gray served as a facilities and game operations intern at the University of South Alabama.
Gray was a student assistant for the Southern Miss men’s and women’s basketball programs from 2015-17. During his tenure with the Golden Eagles, Gray assisted the director of basketball operations with film, player development and camp responsibilities. Gray graduated from Southern Miss with a bachelor’s degree in sports management/business administration in 2017. He recently earned a master’s in higher education administration leadership and policy from Mobile in 2019.
