Assistants on the move in NYC

Here is what I’ve heard surround some NYC area assistants spots….

Drexel assistant Tony Chiles will be hired by Steve Lavin at St. John’s. Chiles has a ton of connections in the city and has spent time as an assistant at Iona and Manhattan. Also, former UVA and Depaul Head Coach Dave Leito is scheduled to meet with Lavin today. I’ve also heard that Manhattan head coach Barry Rohrssen will meet with Lavin in the next few days. This is a bit strange since he denied any interest in the job last week. Other names that I’ve heard that may be involved at are Hofstra’s Van Macon, Arizona’s Book Richardson, and New Heights Kimani Young.

As we mentioned earlier, new Hofstra head coach Tim Welsh has hired his former assistant at Providence Steve DeMeo (http://hoopdirt.com/news/a9eb28ac/hofstra-assistants/…). DeMeo was most recently the head coach at Newberry College and it sounds like his assistant coach Kyle Steinway will also be joining the Hofstra staff as the Director of Basketball Operations. Steinway is a New York native and also worked for Welsh at Providence as a GA and Video Coordinator. I’ve also heard that Welsh may also be going after another of his former assistants – St. Francis’ Allen Griffin. Griffin was on staff at Providence with Welsh and DeMeo and it sounds like he may be heading to Hofstra with them.

Finally, the hot rumor on the streets of Indy is that former Duke star Bobby Hurley will be joining his brother Danny at Wagner. I’m not sure what his role will be, but it sounds like he will be involved with the program in some capacity.
