Danny Peters, the assistant director of basketball operations at the University of Arizona for the past two years, will join the Ball State men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach.
Peters, an Ohio State graduate, has spent four years total with the men’s basketball program at Arizona. The first three of those came while Ball State head coach James Whitford was on the Wildcats’ staff.
"Danny is one of the best and brightest young minds in the game," Whitford said. "He knows the way we want to play inside and out. He has tremendous experience from his days at Ohio State and Arizona. He is really talented, and we are fortunate to have him join us at Ball State."
Peters oversaw Arizona’s video scouting efforts and was responsible for the organization, breakdown, scouting and presentation of game film. The Cincinnati native, who spent time in Indiana during his childhood, also supervised the academic progress of the Wildcat student-athletes. He served as the co-director of the Sean Miller Basketball Camps and coordinated outreach with former Arizona players. Prior to his role as assistant director of basketball operations, Peters was a graduate manager for the Wildcats.
“I am very enthusiastic about joining the Ball State men’s basketball program and having the opportunity to learn under Coach Whitford again,” Peters said. “The people in Muncie and throughout Indiana have a strong passion for the game of basketball. The Ball State brand is strong throughout the state and the Midwest, and I know how much that means in recruiting.”
Peters earned his bachelor’s degree from Ohio State in 2010. He originally worked as a manager with the Buckeye men’s basketball team in 2005-06 before joining the team’s active roster as a player for his final four years in Columbus, Ohio. He appeared in 35 games during his career for coach Thad Matta and was a part of three Big Ten regular season championships and two conference tournament titles. The Buckeyes were the national runner-up in 2006-07.
Peters is the son of long-time coach Dan Peters, who is now the director of basketball operations at Akron. The elder Peters, a former head coach at Youngstown State and St. Joseph’s (Ind.) College, is courageously battling pancreatic cancer. Akron developed the 4 Pete’s Sake initiative last season, leading programs from the Mid-American Conference and around the country in support of his fight.
