Baylor Basketball Staff Update

Baylor men’s basketball head coach Scott Drew has finalized his 2026-27 coaching staff with the additions of associate head coach Jerome Tang, assistant coach and general manager Jake Lindsey and assistant coach Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua. The trio joins returning associate head coach Ron Sanchez and assistant coach Tweety Carter to round out Drew’s five assistant coaches.

“This staff is built on Baylor Family,” said Drew. “We have champions, proven coaches, and three men who once wore this uniform. There’s something special about looking out at practice and seeing our former players coaching the next generation. That kind of loyalty and experience is what makes this staff so strong, and I couldn’t be more excited about where this program is headed.”

Drew enters his 24th season at the helm of Baylor men’s basketball. Last season, Drew notched his 500th career win, becoming one of 25 active Division I head coaches to earn the accolade. The creator of one of the greatest rebuilds in NCAA history, Drew has guided the Bears to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, the 2021 National Championship, and 16 NBA Draft Picks. With Drew’s development, Baylor is one of two schools in the nation with first round picks in each of the last six drafts.

Jerome Tang, who spent 19 seasons on the Baylor bench before departing for the Kansas State head coaching position in 2022, is returning to Waco in his previous role as an associate head coach. Tang was an assistant coach from the very beginning of the Drew era from 2003-17 before being elevated to associate head coach, a role he held through Baylor’s 2021 national championship run. In his 19 years with the program, Tang helped the Bears become regular Big 12 contenders, put together eight consensus top-25 recruiting classes and the highest-ranked class in program history at No. 4 in 2021.

Ron Sanchez returns for his second season with the program and enters his 30th season coaching. Sanchez served as the interim head coach at Virginia for the 2024-25 season and previously served as head coach at Charlotte from 2018 to 2023. During his time as an assistant at Virginia from 2009-18, Sanchez helped the Cavaliers to a top-10 nationally ranked defense in each of his last six seasons as an assistant, including the nation’s No. 1 defense in 2017-18.

Tweety Carter enters his fifth season on the staff. The former Baylor standout joined the staff in 2022 and was elevated to assistant coach in 2024. Carter has helped mentor five top-25 NBA Draft picks and aided the Bears to four consecutive No. 3 seeds in the NCAA Tournament. Carter played 131 games with 89 starts for Scott Drew from 2006 to 2010, leading the Bears to the Elite Eight in his senior season.

Jake Lindsey joins the staff in his first season as both assistant coach and general manager. After working with the Utah Jazz organization, Lindsey spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Grand Canyon University under Bryce Drew, where the Lopes made an NCAA Tournament appearance. A former Baylor guard from 2015-18, Lindsey was part of three NCAA Tournament teams and was a member of the first Bears squad to earn a No. 1 ranking in the AP Top 25 Poll.

Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua rounds out the group of five assistant coaches in his first season on the Baylor staff. The Cameroonian returns to Waco after spending the last two seasons working with the San Antonio Spurs as the Basketball Operations Video Assistant, contributing to the Spurs historic postseason run to the 2026 NBA Finals. A key member of Drew’s 2021 national championship team, Tchamwa Tchatchoua earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2022 and became one of college basketball’s most inspiring stories after defying expectations to return from a devastating knee injury.

Ty Beard returns for his 10th season as a member of the Baylor basketball staff and his third as the Director of Basketball Operations. Beard, an alumnus of the Baylor class 2009, joined the Bears as director of video operations in 2017 and began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for Drew’s staff from 2009 to 2011.

Director of Video Operations Gabe Awbrey returns for his third season as a full-time staff member and fifth season with the program. Awbrey previously spent two seasons on staff as a graduate manager and served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Manhattan Christian College, from 2021-22.

Charlie Melton, Director of Athletics Performance and one of Baylor Athletics’ longest tenured employees, heads into his 21st season with the Bears, while Dave Snyder, Assistant AD of Athletic Medicine, returns for his eighth year with the men’s basketball program and ninth at Baylor, and Matt Rodgers enters his third year as assistant director of operations.
