Siena Men’s Basketball Head Coach Gerry McNamara has completed his first staff with the addition of a Capital Region coaching legend. Brian Beaury, who led nearby Division II The College of Saint Rose to 654 wins spanning a decorated 33-year head coaching career, has been named the Saints’ special assistant to the head coach.
“I’m really happy about Coach Beaury being a part of my staff,” said McNamara. “I have an incredible amount of respect for him and what he has done over the course of his head coaching career. He’s a great coach and as good a person. His experiences will be so helpful to our program.”
An inductee into the New York State Basketball Coaches (2010), Capital Region Basketball (2012), and Saint Rose Athletics (2010) Halls of Fame, Beaury amassed a stellar 654-343 (.656) career head coaching record spanning 33 seasons leading Saint Rose (1986-2018, 2023-24). A 1999 National Coach of the Year Finalist and the 2017 National Association of Basketball Coaches Eastern District Coach of the Year, he led the Golden Knights to 15 NCAA Division II National Tournament appearances, highlighted by four Sweet Sixteens, three Elite Eights, and a Final Four.
“I’m beyond excited and grateful for the opportunity to join Coach McNamara and his staff at Siena College,” said Beaury. “I’ve always been a big fan of Coach McNamara and, as I’ve gotten to know him and his family better, that respect has blossomed. I can’t wait to get to work with Coach, his outstanding staff, and the talented group of young men they’ve assembled. I’m excited to help the program grow on and off the court to become the best version of themselves and make every member of the Siena community proud.”
A five-time Coach of the Year who became just the ninth Division II head coach to reach the 600-win mark in 2016, Beaury led Saint Rose to 27 winning seasons – including 22 straight to begin his tenure – highlighted by 18 20-win campaigns, while capturing eight conference titles. After initially announcing his retirement following the conclusion of the 2017-18 season, Beaury returned to the Saint Rose sideline this past winter to lead his alma mater during its final season.
Prior to his duties being refocused entirely towards his coaching responsibilities, Beaury served Saint Rose as either the associate or assistant athletic director for 22 of his seasons working for the College. He was a recipient of the Saint Rose Distinguished Alumni Award in 1996.
Beaury first entered the coaching ranks at the age of just 21 as an assistant coach at the Junior College of Albany in 1982. He returned to his alma mater in 1984, and was named the second head coach in Saint Rose Men’s Basketball history in 1986. Beaury also previously served as an assistant coach for the Albany Patroons of The Basketball League (2021-22), and was the founder and executive director for the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame (1990-99).
A 1982 graduate of Saint Rose with his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Beaury earned his Masters of Education in College Student Personnel/Counseling from the College in 1991. Beaury was a three-time team captain, two-time All-Conference selection and team MVP his senior year for the Golden Knights, where he ranks in the top-10 all-time in program history in both assists and steals.
“I’ve always had great respect for Siena and its athletic department, especially the men’s basketball program,” added Beaury. “In many ways, over my 33 years as head coach at Saint Rose, I tried to model our program after theirs. Since my playing days at Saint Rose, Siena Basketball has had an influence on me. Mike Long, my college coach and mentor, is a Siena graduate who took his experience as a student athlete at Siena and brought it with him to Saint Rose. The alumni support and involvement was something I always respected and attempted to emulate with our program. It’s a thrill to be here at Siena College, where the support is unwavering and everyone shares the same goals.”
