Bentick Named Assistant Coach at Monmouth

Monmouth University Men’s Basketball and Head Coach King Rice have announced the hiring of Clive Bentick as an assistant coach. Bentick joins the staff after 15 seasons at St. Francis Brooklyn.

“Clive had an incredible run at St. Francis Brooklyn with Glenn Braica and we’re so excited to have him join our staff,” said Rice. “Clive is a guy that could be a head coach right now. He’s one of the most respected recruiters on the East Coast. He was a great player at Canisius, he knows the game and had a great run on the staff at St. Francis Brooklyn. Adding Clive alongside Brian Reese, who was a head coach previously, we’re extremely excited to have them on our staff and we can’t wait to get going.”

Listed by “Stadium” in 2021 as one of the top Division I men’s basketball assistant coaches in the country, Bentick spent 15 seasons in Brooklyn Heights, the last three as the program’s associate head coach. He has over 20 seasons of Division I basketball experience to his credit, and helped lead the Terriers to two national postseason tournaments. The 2014-15 team won 23 games en route to the NEC regular season crown and a berth in the NIT for the first time since 1963. He also helped lead St. Francis Brooklyn to the 2019 CIT after a 17-win season.

“I’m honored to be joining the Monmouth Basketball program and family,” said Bentick.” I will forever be grateful for the opportunity that Coach Rice is giving me. I am looking forward to building on the recent success of the program and forming a strong relationship with the players, staff and Monmouth community. Excited to get to work!”

Individually, Bentick coached the program’s all-time leader in scoring, Jalen Cannon to 2015 NEC Player of the Year accolades and an All-NEC First team recognition while also coaching guard Brent Jones, who racked up 616 assists in four seasons to set the program mark. Amdy Fall also excelled for the Terriers in Bentick’s time, winning NEC Defensive Player of the Year twice in a row, while Akeem Bennett also won the award in 2011.

Bentick played a significant role in player development in Brooklyn. 14 players under Bentick’s coaching received All-NEC accolades in addition to six NEC All-Rookie choices. Nine Terriers scored over 1,000 points in Bentick’s 15 seasons.

Prior to his long tenure with St. Francis Brooklyn, Bentick spent one season in 2006-07 at LeMoyne College and two seasons at his alma mater, Canisius. An All-MAAC performer for the Golden Griffins, he played in 104 games and scored 13.6 points per contest as a senior. He led Canisius to the 2001 MAAC title game with a 26-point game in the tournament against Niagara culminating in the game-winning basket with under a second remaining.

Bentick ranks 48th on Canisius’ all-time scoring list with 840 points and at the time of his graduation was fourth on the Golden Griffins career assists list with 354 helpers. Following his graduation, he received honorable mention honors on the Canisius College Post-1970’s All-Century Team. Additionally, he was a finalist for the 1998 NCAA Sports Person of the Year Award.

Bentick played scholastically at A. Phillip Randolph High School, and he received a Business Management and Marketing Degree from Canisius in 2001 and a Master’s in Sports Administration in 2006 from Canisius.

Bentick joins Brian Reese as new hires on the Monmouth Men’s Basketball staff this summer.
