Minnesota State University Moorhead head men’s basketball coach Chad Walthall has announced that Tim Bergstraser has been named as an assistant coach on the Dragon staff.
Bergstraser is no stranger to MSUM men’s basketball, having served as a graduate assistant from 2015-17. During his time at MSUM,, the Dragons went 54-12, won two division championships and an overall conference championship in 2016-2017. The Dragons also went to two consecutive NCAA tournaments with Bergstraser on staff.
“I am pleased to announce Tim Bergstraser as our new assistant coach,” Walthall said. “Tim is familiar to the Dragon basketball program, and did an outstanding job as our graduate assistant for two seasons. For him to rejoin our program in this capacity is very well-deserved. Tim consistently exhibited unique qualities and work ethic in recruiting, as well as a comprehensive understanding of team and individual skill development that is respected by players and coaches. Tim is very organized and his familiarity with MSUM and our current players will greatly assist in the transition.”
For his efforts, Bergstraser received the NABC Under Armour 30-Under-30 award. He spent last season as an assistant coach at Quincy (Ill.)
“I am more than fired up to head back up north to coach at MSUM,” Bergstraser said. “I couldn’t be happier to accept a position to work with Coach Walthall again. He is an extremely competitive individual that holds his guys accountable in everything on and off the floor. Through my two years as a graduate assistant I learned a large amount from him that has helped me excel in this profession. MSUM is a very special place to me as it has held some of my greatest memories in my short coaching career.”
During the 2014-2015 season, Bergstraser served as an assistant coach the the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
In his playing career, Bergstraser attended St. Cloud State. As a Huskie, Bergstraser made a trip the the NCAA Final Four in the 2009-2010 season. Bergstraser was an all conference performer in 2011-2012, averaging 12.8 points per game and grabbing 7.5 rebounds per game. His career was cut short due to three ACL knee surgeries.
