Bill Coen Passes Jim Calhoun for Most Wins at Northeastern

Tyson Walker led all scorers with 19 points, Chris Doherty grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds, and Bill Coen etched his name on the top of the Northeastern record book with his 251st win, moving ahead of legendary coach Jim Calhoun’s 250 wins from 1972-86, as the second-seeded Huskies (10-8) defeated No. 7 seed William & Mary (7-10), 63-47, in the quarterfinals of the Hercules Tires CAA Men’s Basketball Championship on Sunday at Atlantic Union Bank Center. The Huskies outscored the Tribe 38-19 in the second half to advance to their fourth straight semifinal game.

Walker, the CAA Defensive Player of the Year, posted a game-high five steals and dished out four assists. Doherty finished one point shy of a double-double with nine points, and eight of his 18 boards were on the offensive end. Coen tied former George Mason coach Jim Larrañaga (1998-2011) for the league record with 18 CAA tournament wins and he is trying to lead Northeastern to its fourth consecutive CAA Championship Game, and sixth in the last nine years.

CAA Sixth Man of the Year Jahmyl Telfort finished with 11 of his 13 points in the second half, grabbing five rebounds, while fellow freshman Coleman Stucke tallied 13 points, eight in the final 20 minutes, connecting on 3-of-7 shots from behind the arc and grabbed five boards.

Trailing 28-25 at the half, the Huskies came out firing in the second half with a 22-4 run over the first eight minutes to seize control in the game. Northeastern made five of its first seven 3-pointers and were shooting over 50 percent during that run. The Huskies would push their lead to 20 in the second half before winning by 16.

Northeastern will take on the winner of No. 3 seed College of Charleston and No. 6 seed Drexel on Monday night at 9:30 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network.
