University of Delaware men’s basketball head coach Martin Ingelsby has announced the promotion of Bill Phillips to associate head coach.
Phillips, who primarily works with the Blue Hen post players, arrived in Newark along with Ingelsby in the summer of 2016. He will begin his sixth season on the men’s basketball staff this fall.
Delaware has won 73 games during Phillips’ tenure, and increased its win total in each of his first four seasons. The Blue Hens also won a CAA Tournament game during his first four years, and advanced to the semifinals in both 2019 and 2020.
In 2019-20 the Blue Hens finished 22-11, recording the eighth 20-win season in program history. Delaware set a program record by winning its first nine games, earning a vote in the Associated Press Top 25 poll for the first time in two decades. The Blue Hens tied for fourth place in the CAA and defeated Charleston in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals for the second consecutive year.
Phillips has played a crucial role in the development of forward Dylan Painter, who was a first team All-District, first team All-CAA, and CAA All-Defensive Team pick this season while ranking sixth in the nation with 11.5 rebounds per game.
“Bill has been an instrumental part of our program’s success over the last five years and I am honored to name him associate head coach. He brings a passion and energy to our basketball team every day and works extremely hard to help our student-athletes become the best version of themselves. Bill is one of the best skill development coaches in the country and I am excited for him to assume an even greater leadership role within our program,” Ingelsby said.
“I am grateful every day for the opportunity to do something that I’m passionate about, and to be part of what we continue to build here at UD. I’m humbled by the promotion and excited to start summer workouts with our players,” Phillips said.
