Black Hills State Athletic Director, Jhett Albers, announced today the hiring of Jeff Trumbauer as the next head men’s basketball coach for the Yellow Jackets.
"We are extremely excited to have Jeff and his family joining our Yellow Jacket family. He brings a tremendous amount of experience to all facets of the head men’s basketball position. His knowledge, leadership, and proven success will be true assets to our men’s program, Yellow Jacket Athletics, and the community of Spearfish," stated Albers. "We are looking forward to the future of Yellow Jacket men’s basketball with Coach Trumbauer at the helm."
Trumbauer has spent the past three seasons as the associate head coach at Augustana College, and as an assistant coach two years prior to that. He helped lead the Vikings to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances and three top-five finishes in the NSIC. He also developed two 1st Team All-NSIC athletes in 2014 and signed and developed the NSIC Freshman of the Year in 2013 as well as a 2nd team NSIC All-Conference athlete.
Prior to his time with the Vikings, he was the head coach at Jamestown College for six years, where he guided his teams to two DAC Championships (2008, 2010) and two NAIA tournament appearances (2008, 2010). In addition, Trumbauer coached seven All-Americans, 11 All-Conference players, as well as the 2007 DAC Defensive Player of the Year, the 2008 DAC Most Valuable Player, and the 2010 Newcomer of the Year. Coach Trumbauer earned Coach of the Year honors in 2008. Off the court, Trumbauer’s student-athletes were successful as well in that his teams averaged a 3.15 grade point average and every one of his players graduated.
"I’m honored and excited about this opportunity at Black Hills State University," Coach Trumbauer said. "I am very impressed with the direction of the program and the collective desire by everyone involved to make BHSU a premier Division II program. We have some work to do but I am confident that we can build something special." He then added, "My family and I are excited to become members of the Spearfish community."
The Yellow Jacket Athletic Department, and the Black Hills State community as a whole, welcome Jeff and his wife Jodi and their four children; Katelyn (9), Leah (7), Joe (4) and Andrew (1).
