Boise State men’s basketball assistant coach Tim Duryea will retire after a 35-year coaching career in college basketball, including the last eight seasons with the Broncos. His last day with Boise State is Friday (May 15).
Duryea joined Boise State prior to the 2018-19 season and has been a part of one of the best stretches in Bronco basketball history as the lead offensive coach. The Broncos have accumulated 171 wins in the last eight years, recorded six 20-win seasons, made three NCAA Tournament appearances, and won the 2021-22 Mountain West regular season and tournament titles.
“I’m grateful for having 35 years as a college coach and really appreciate what the game has done for my family and me over the years,” said Duryea. “I’ve been so fortunate to work for great people and have been around phenomenal coaches. I’m also thankful for all of the players and having the opportunity to see how good of people they are and how much I value them. I’ve lived and traveled to a lot of places, but to finish my career in Boise has been wonderful. Thank you to Coach Rice, Coach Burns and the rest of the Boise State coaching staff over the last eight years, and I’m looking forward to the next chapter with my family.”
“Tim Duryea was the consummate pro,” said Leon Rice, Boise State head men’s basketball coach. “He added so much to our staff, starting with being an amazing coach and a great person. We were blessed to have him for eight years, and in that time, he made me so much better. I learned a great amount from him, and I know our staff did as well. We’re grateful for him. Once a Bronco, always a Bronco.”
In a first for the program, Duryea was part of the Broncos’ teams that made team history by reaching the NCAA Tournament in three straight seasons. The first of the trio of trips was in 2021-22 when Boise State set program bests for total wins (27) and conference wins (15) on its way to winning the Mountain West regular-season title outright and capturing the Mountain West tournament crown, both of which were firsts in program history. The Broncos went on to earn an eight-seed in that year’s NCAA Tournament.
Duryea and the Broncos followed up the historic 2021-22 season with second-place finish in the Mountain West in 2022-23 and the third straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2023-24.
Duryea helped coach 11 Broncos to all-conference honors, including three-time All-Mountain West honoree Tyson Degenhart and two-time selections Marcus Shaver, Abu Kigab, Derrick Alston, Jr. and Justinian Jessup. Four different Broncos were top-10 in the Mountain West in scoring under Duryea, including Degenhart and Alston, Jr. who both did it twice. Alvaro Cardenas and Shaver were top-10 in assists during the same span as Cardenas led the entire conference in 2024-25.
Duryea was the head coach at Utah State from 2015-18 prior to becoming a Bronco and spent a total of 17 seasons in Logan with the Aggies. He was an assistant coach from 2001-08 and associate head coach from 2008-15.
Duryea’s coaching stops also include a stint as the head coach at Hutchinson (Kansas) Community College from 1999-2001 and as an assistant coach at Hutchinson from 1997-98, an assistant coach at his alma mater North Texas from 1993-97, and an assistant coach at Colorado State from 1988-90.
He finished his coaching career with 11 NCAA Tournament appearances and eight conference championships.
Duryea started his college basketball playing career at Texas-Pan American (now UTRGV) before transferring to North Texas where he was a co-captain in 1988 and helped lead the Mean Green to the NCAA Tournament.
