Stonehill College men’s basketball head coach Chris Kraus announced the hiring of Tom Bonacum as an assistant coach ahead of the 2025-26 season.
Bonacum joins the coaching staff at Stonehill after spending the past five seasons with former Iona and FDU head coach Tobin Anderson. Most recently, Bonacum was an assistant coach at Iona for two seasons, leading the Gaels to a 33-34 record overall and a 22-18 record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
Iona made it to the MAAC Championship game this past season, falling just short of an NCAA Tournament bid. The year prior, the Gaels reached the second round of the MAAC tournament. Previously, Bonacum has been responsible for offensive game planning, skill development, film analysis, and team operations
In 2022-23, his lone season at FDU, Bonacum helped guide the Knights to a 21-16 record and a 10-6 record in NEC play. That same season, FDU made it to the NEC Championship game, falling to Merrimack by one point while earning the NEC’s automatic qualifier bid for the NCAA Tournament. After defeating Texas Southern in the First Four round, the Knights made history, becoming the second 16-seed to defeat a 1-seed when FDU defeated Purdue, 63-58.
Bonacum also spent three seasons as an assistant coach at St. Thomas Aquinas College, where the Spartans posted a 67-12 record with ECC tournament championships and NCAA tournament appearances in each season, including two trips to the NCAA tournament Sweet 16 round. Bonacum was an integral part of the skill development of NABC Division II All-American Grant Singleton and Demetre Roberts, a First Team All-Region and First Team All-ECC, two players also instrumental in FDU’s successful 2022-23 campaign.
Bonacum served one season as a player development intern for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks in 2018-2019. His responsibilities included working with members of the coaching staff with an emphasis on player development, video and analytics, serving on the scout team for practices and gameday walkthroughs, charting and analyzing workouts for analytic and development groups, and assisting with film study and breakdown of other NBA teams and players.
Bonacum was a 1,500+ point scorer for NCAA Division III Ramapo College in Mahwah, New Jersey. His highly decorated career included a First Team All-American and All-District honors, first team selections for the NABC Atlantic Region, ECAC Metro All-Stars, All-MBWA, and All-NJAC honors. Bonacum was the 2015 NJAC Rookie of the Year and 2017 Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Player of the Year. As a senior, the Roadrunners appeared in the 2018 NCAA Division III Final Four. Bonacum started all 80 games he appeared in from his sophomore through junior campaigns.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Ramapo in 2018.
The Stonehill men’s basketball team made its postseason debut at the Division I level this past season, falling in the quarterfinal round of the NEC Championship Tournament at No. 4-seeded FDU, finishing the season with a 15-17 overall record and a 7-9 mark in league play. The upcoming 2025-26 season will be the first time the Skyhawks will be eligible for the NCAA Tournament after Stonehill College successfully completed its Division I reclassification process.
