Northern Illinois University men’s basketball head coach Mark Montgomery announced today the promotion of Jon Borovich to associate head coach. Borovich is entering his fifth season as a member of the Huskie men’s basketball coaching staff.
“I’m proud to announce Jon’s promotion to associate head coach,” said Montgomery. “He has outstanding work ethic, coaching ability and dedication, all of which have been tremendous assets to our program. I am extremely grateful for all of his hard work to this point and I am excited about his future here at NIU.”
Borovich was Montgomery’s first staff addition in 2011, coming to DeKalb following four seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Dayton. In their first season at NIU, freshmen accounted for 56 percent of all minutes played, the sixth-highest percentage in the country. Despite that youth, NIU earned its first postseason victory since 2003.
In 2013-14, the Huskies recorded the largest single-season win improvement in school history, and the 10th-largest nationally, posting 15 victories, NIU’s most since the 2005-06 season.
Last year, the Huskies finished with a 14-16 overall record, finishing the regular season with four-straight victories including a win over MAC regular season champion Central Michigan. NIU recorded its best RPI since 2005-06 and played its toughest strength of schedule since 2004-05. The Huskies also won their first six home games of the season to tie a school record with an 11-game home winning streak dating back to 2013-14.
“I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity Coach Montgomery has given me the last four years and I’m very excited about the future of NIU athletics under the leadership of Sean Frazier,” said Borovich. “It is an honor to work at such a great university, with high character student-athletes and with such a driven basketball staff here at NIU. It’s a great time to be a Huskie!”
Borovich played collegiately at Central Michigan University, graduating in 2001. Following his playing career, the Bloomfield Hills, Mich., native spent two seasons as a graduate assistant under Tom Izzo at Michigan State before moving to the University of Dayton as Director of Basketball Operations under current Georgia Tech head coach Brian Gregory.
In 2005, Borovich joined the staff at Oakland University as an assistant coach before returning to Dayton as an assistant two years later.
