Boston College Basketball Staff Update

Head coach Jim Christian announced the addition of Briana Brown and Joseph Carty to the Boston College men’s basketball staff.  Brown is the program’s new player personnel specialist and staff assistant, while Carty becomes the team’s new graduate manager.

“We are excited to welcome Briana and Joe to the BC men’s basketball family.  They are two outstanding individuals who I know will do a great job for us in two very important roles,” said Christian.

Brown comes to Heights after spending the previous two seasons as the coordinator of women’s basketball operations at Sacred Heart.  In this role, she managed all aspects of the Pioneers’ team travel operations, coordinated the team’s community outreach program, and served as director of the Sacred Heart Girl’s Basketball Camp.

Prior to that, she spent two seasons at St. John’s, serving as the assistant director of operations for women’s basketball, while also working as an academic tutor in the office of academic support at her alma mater.

A four-year women’s basketball student-athlete from 2010-14, she earned her bachelor’s degree in childhood education from St. John’s in 2015.  A two-time team captain, the Red Storm appeared in the NCAA Tournament in each of Brown’s four seasons of competition, including a run to the Sweet Sixteen in 2012.  Off the hardwood, she was a Peer Mentor and inducted into the President’s Society – the most prestigious honor society at St. John’s.   A member of the School of Education’s Dean’s List from 2012-14, Brown was also a three-time Big East All-Academic honoree.

In 2019, Brown earned a master’s degree in business management in 2019 from Durham University in England.  While at Durham, Brown continued her playing career while also serving as an assistant coach with both the men’s and women’s programs.

Carty joins the staff as one of the team’s graduate managers.  A native of Natick, Mass., Carty brings experience both on the court as a player and in individual skill development.  He spent the 2018-19 season as an assistant coach at Western New England College.

A 2018 graduate of Bridgewater State with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management, with a double minor in Finance and Accounting, Carty enjoyed an outstanding three-year career with the Bears.  In his career at BSU, he averaged 13.1 points and 10.4 rebounds in 65 games played.

As a senior during the 2017-18 campaign, Carty served as team captain and led the Bears to the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.  That season, Carty ranked among the top post players in the country, ranking fifth in rebounding (12.7 rpg), while tallying 17 double-doubles – good for seventh-best nationally.

As a prep, Carty graduated from the St. Andrew’s School in Barrington, Rhode Island, competing for legendary head coach Michael Hart in the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC).
