Brandl Promoted to Associate Head Coach at Dakota Wesleyan University

Jacob Brandl has been the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball top assistant coach since 2014. Thanks to his tireless work ethic on and off the court, Brandl has earned the title of Associate Head Men’s Basketball Coach, the DWU Athletic Department announced Monday.

“We couldn’t be more thankful for all the years of service Jacob has brought to the men’s basketball program and our University as a whole,” Director of Athletics Jon Hart stated. “His dedication and leadership have helped uphold our tradition of excellence in basketball and this promotion reflects that.”

In his time with the Tigers, Brandl has been responsible for recruiting players from the Midwest region, serving as the academic coordinator for teams that have never finished below a 3.3 team GPA and finishing with 15 NAIA Scholar-Athletes and two NAIA Academic All-Americans.

“I am extremely grateful to Jon, Curt, Coach Wilber and the rest of the administration here at DWU for this opportunity,” Brandl said. “Dakota Wesleyan and the Mitchell community have a strong basketball tradition and I have been honored to be able to represent both for the past seven years. I am proud to say that Mitchell is my home and look forward for the years to come!”

On the court, the North Platte, Neb., native has helped coach the men’s basketball team to five-consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearances, including a trip to the National Championship Game in 2015 and become the 2015 Great Plains Athletic Conference Champions. Brandl has coached 13 NAIA All-American selections, 28 All-Conference selections, two GPAC Player-of-the-Year’s, one Defensive-Player-of-the-Year and one Freshman-of-the-Year.

“What a deserving promotion for Coach Brandl to the position of Associate Head Coach in our program,” head men’s basketball coach Matt Wilber commented. “He has provided so much to our players and university over the years with tremendous energy, a selfless attitude and total dedication.”

Brandl has also coached six 1,000-point scorers and a pair of 2,000-point scorers, including 2019 DWU Hall of Fame inductee Jalen Voss and senior Ty Hoglund. During his time as the top assistant coach, the DWU men’s basketball team has an overall record of 124-48.

“He has his footprint in every area of our program and is a tireless worker in a continued effort to push our program in the right direction,” Wilber stated. “Our players and I are blessed to have him working with us and we look forward to the future with him here at DWU.”
