Johnson County Community College (KS) men’s basketball coach Mike Jeffers has announced the hiring of Brandon Burgette as assistant men’s basketball coach for the Cavaliers. “I am excited to coach with Coach Jeffers and become a member of the Cavaliers family,” Burgette said following his announcement. “Coach Jeffers has a lot of history here and is one of the best in the conference. It also feels great to be able to coach in my hometown and recruit players in the area to continue the tradition. I look forward to embracing this opportunity and not only meet the demands of championship basketball, but watching young men grow, not only as athletes but student-athletes.”
Burgette, a native of Kansas City, Mo., brings a wealth of coaching and playing experience with him. He will be involved in all aspects of the program, including game preparation, recruiting and scouting.
Last year, Burgette returned to his hometown roots to open his own basketball training service, BreedBallers. In addition to working with young basketball players in the area, some of Burgette’s clients include NBA forward Bandon Rush, Baylor’s Lester Medford and Ishmail Wainwright and Iowa State’s Jameel Mckay. Burgette also helped coach an AAU Kansas City area team call Team Rush KC, formerly known as YOBO.
Prior to starting BreedBallers, Burgette served four seasons at Indian Hills Community College as an assistant coach, and two seasons as a student assistant at his alma mater, Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo.
Burgette helped Indian Hills compile an impressive record of 122-16 in his four seasons, and make three trips to the NJCAA Tournament, including a runner-up finish in the 2013-14. He also helped coach six players who were selected as NJCAA All-America performers. While at Southwest Baptist, Burgette helped coach the team to a 20-11 record in 2010-11.
Burgette played two years at Southwest Baptist, starting 45 games. The Bearcats won back-to-back MIAA conference titles and made two appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament, losing in the second round once and making it to the Sweet Sixteen the other year. He averaged 9.8 points in his career and was voted the Sixth Man of the Year in 2009.
Burgette played professionally for two years in the United State Basketball League with the Springfield Thrill. As the starting point guard, he led them to a 10-4 record in 2010 and a 12-2 mark in 2009.
Burgette earned his bachelor’s degree in community recreation from Southwest Baptist University, and recently earned a master’s degree in sports marketing from the University of Central Missouri.
He and his wife, Briana, have a son, Brayden.
